When a new charity church opens its doors, it’s easy to forget that it’s still a work in progress.
With more than a decade of development and design, the first of which was dedicated to the creation of the charity institute—a place for charitable organizations to launch new projects and create jobs—it has taken the world by storm.
The institute, founded by the late founder of the charitable institute, David J. Dugan, is now one of the biggest names in the nonprofit space, with projects ranging from a $250 million rehabilitation of a former prison to a $1 billion program to fight HIV and tuberculosis.
But the institute is far from finished.
As the first major charity institute in the country to open, the institute will have to make significant changes to its approach to the nonprofit community in order to catch up to the rapid pace of change taking place in the private sector.
“There are a lot of big-picture challenges that we’ve got to address,” Dugan told us at the time of his death.
“I think we need to do a better job of not just focusing on the infrastructure but also on the culture of the place, the culture that we need, the ethos of the way we operate.”
And that ethos is evolving fast.
Duggan’s death in January 2015 set off a firestorm of criticism and anger, which continued with the creation in the years since of the Dugan Institute, which Dugan founded in 1992.
It has since become one of our top 10 best-performing charities in the world.
With the Dugans’ legacy still strong and the institute still in its infancy, we spoke with Dugan about how he sees the charity community moving forward and what he sees as the future of the institute.
What is the Duganian Institute?
The Duganian Institutes are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
It is based in Philadelphia, and is a 501c(3) for the purpose of providing funding to charitable institutions that do not have a traditional 501(k) status.
Duganyan said the Duganyans’ mission is to support charities by providing grants and loans, including to charity institutions, to establish new, sustainable charities.
“It’s a little bit of an entrepreneurial approach,” Duganyn said.
“We see a lot more opportunity for philanthropy, and we see a whole lot of new opportunities.”
Who is David Dugan?
Dugan was born on August 6, 1951 in Brooklyn, New York.
His father, William Dugan Sr., was a prominent attorney and founder of a Brooklyn real estate development company.
Dugans mother, Dorothy, was an actress and model, and his father’s first wife, Nancy, is an actress.
Duganson is also a descendant of the late John Dugan and his sister, Barbara.
Duganian was educated at New York City’s St. John’s School, and at the University of Pennsylvania.
He then received his BA in English and History from Queens College, and received his M.A. in Literature from Columbia University.
Dugann worked in film production and TV production before landing a job as an executive at his father-in-law’s company.
At age 29, Dugan joined his father as a director of operations at his first real estate firm.
He was the sole director of development for the institute, which had three full-time employees.
Dugán said that he and his wife wanted to make a nonprofit institute that was financially sustainable and focused on the development of the arts and humanities, so they hired an economist to design the institute’s tax structure.
“Our mission was to make sure we could make sure that this was not a very costly endeavor,” Dugán told us.
What we were able to do was, I think, the largest tax deduction ever in the history of the United States.”
How does the Dugano Institute operate?
Dugany’s institute operates through three main programs: the Duganism Center, a center dedicated to building foundations for the future, as well as a nonprofit foundation.
The Dugany Foundation, an organization created to make donations to Dugan’s foundation, also focuses on developing a nonprofit fund that would help Dugan fulfill his philanthropic goals.
Duganne, who runs the institute with Dugany and two of his children, said that the Duganne Foundation was a “very, very important foundation for the foundation to build.”
Dugan said that it was important to give the Dugann Foundation a chance to grow and “to give it the ability to become a really large and really powerful organization that can impact people’s lives.”
The Dugan Foundation also has a number of partnerships with the Dugania Foundation, which is a private nonprofit organization with the sole purpose of raising funds for the Dugane Institute.
Dugani said that one
