SANTA CLARA, Calif.

— A woman’s death inside a Santa Clara, Calif., orphanage opened the door to an investigation into the circumstances of her death, the city attorney said Wednesday.

The woman, who was about 50 years old, was found unconscious in a small room on the seventh floor of the Santa Clara County Animal Care and Control facility in November 2016, officials said.

An autopsy later found that she died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the county attorney.

The investigation is ongoing.

The woman was not being identified pending notification of next of kin, the county said.
